The Château 's different rooms

The Staircase

The double spiral of the staircase developes majestically in the reduced space availible, swept upwards by the lightness of the baroque wrought-iron banisters, attributed to Pfaff.

The dining-room

Beneath the ceiling decorated with the blues and pinks of a cloudy morning sky, it is immediately evident that everything has been miniaturized, with two-drawer sideboards and narrow tables. The window set in to the wood work is typical Flemish work, while the transom panels show momochrome studies of Italian bridges.

The round, summer drawing-room

salon d'été avec vue sur le tapis vert   This the earth of the original summer-house, the “maison des feuilles”: each window has a different view of the park, reflected by  symetrically placed mirrors. In the center of the ceiling an eagle is painted in the memory of the Baron de Kalb, son in law of van Robais , who served in the USA under Lafayette, losing his life for his ideal. The panels over the doors, attributed to Pillement, represent the morning, evening and midday. The woodwork, decorated by Pompeian motifs, show the ostrich egg presented by queen Marie Antoinette to Madame van Robais.

The winter drawing room

This room is lit by a wrought iron chandelier with Vincennes porcelain fleurettes, and heated by an inset fireplace. If you look at the passage linking the rooms you will see that the doors are decorated in “trompe l’oeil”to give the impression of greater space and longer perspectives.

The library

This room houses various souvenirs of Bagatelle’s most illustrious visitors: the portrait of Abraham van Robais by Perronneau (the artist did three identical portraits, one of which is in the Louvre).
